Title: Best gun in history?
Post by: Gunfreak on February 04, 2007, 07:29:59 PM
Ok, mabye this is a bad thread but I'll Give it a try
Best gun in any category.

My all time favorite is
Colt 1911 and its friends
The first semi auto pistol was the best, almost a 100 years old and it's more popular then ever.

.38 speical and a Ruger have been the smoothest pistols I've every shot. Not sure about them being "the best", but that's what I perfer to shot.  For a hunting weapon, an old Winchester varmint rifle does me fine.

For most influential gun, i'd say the Brown Bess. There was no musket in 17th-18th century Europe that could compare to its accuracy, smooth reloading and sheer power. Also, the practice of loading a regiment's muskets with two balls instead of one made its very volley particularly devastating. The Baker Rifle, first reliable rifled gun in history was also quite influential.

For the best firearm, the AK-47 certainly stands out for its reliability, ruggedness and ease of use.

Not sure about the best, but my favorite must be the Baker Rifle, for the reasoms Isaac Brock outlined above

My vote would go to any Mauser rifle or carbine, released from the 1880's to 2003.

I'm biased towards rifles I suppose, anyone can fire a Machine gun, modern one anyway. I vote for the Baker Rifle or the Lee Enfield. I fight the Lee Enfield while in the Army Cadets and nearly took off my shoulder by not holding it properly.  ;D

AK 47, I mean they were introduced in 1947 and I'm sure theres probably some random terrorist running around with one today.

Well, how about the German MG42? Hitlers buzzsaw, devastating if set up well.

Otherwise I'd go with the AK47, very well designed, cheap to make, good rate of fire and accuracy, and excellent resiliance. An AK47 can be buried in a river bed for about 10 days, dug up and will work fine. Its 7.62 mm round is definately a man-stopper round when compared to the 5.56 mm rounds used by most European Armies.

Personally I got to fire an old SLR a couple of times, that was pretty great.

I suppose you could say the best gun in History was the first one ever made as every gun since has been based on that one.  O0

I'd have to say the german MG42. One of the most powerful machine guns even to this day. Tear a whole through you good if you get shot with one of those.
Good thing they arent mounted on street corners lol

Its main characteristics can still be found in the MG 1, 2 or 3 of the Bundeswehr.

I always liked the M1 Garand. It's been consistent in WW2 shooters for years now and was always fun to kill Nazi's with.

sometime I envy the americans, some of the gun laws in europe are just to restrictive.

If I want a woriknig replica of a Land Pattern Musket, or a Springfield Model 1861 I need a licens for it.
thats just stupid.

I'm quite glad of gun laws really but thats just my opinion. I'm not hot on the law as it stands but I think Leo you might be right, if you own an antique gun you do not need a licence. Perhaps someone can give a better account.

over here, if the gun is made before 1885 then you don't need a licens, but a working Springfield Model 1861 that you can fire with out it blowing up. it's gonig to cost me $6000-10 000

As far as influence goes, the Charleville and Brown Bess were two great muskets, Lee Henfield for rifles, Machinenpistole for submachine guns (god I love those) and AK-47 for assault rifles.

Mausers were probably the best ever made, in terms of quality.  MG42 as well.

I own an Enfield rifle, and it's pretty good as well.

I also own a Russian SKS from the 50's...it may be cheap, but it's pretty realiable.

I think it would have been more like:  That nutcase keeps putting explosive powder in a bell and lighting it.  He seems to think it fascinating that bits go flying.  Stay well clear of the madman kids.

i have fired very little and what I have fired was in my youth in the Army Cadets, (RGJ, Neville company). I have fired a bren, .303 (bruised soldier and I got grit in the bullet chamber, lol) I had a quick go on a SLR (can't remember the model but it was in service in the 80's) and a Pistol I recall (Brit one) plus the usual .22 for target practice butthey don't count really. 005
