First game in CNAW (remarks inside)
« on: October 02, 2008, 11:46:02 AM »
Hi everybody,
I got the game on Monday and just finished my first campaign as Napoleon (i'm french, so forget typing errors please).

1st Impressions :
============
I was waiting for this game since a long time, and after CEAW, i was expecting this one. This game looks cool, and is different in many ways from CEAW (it's impossible to make a continuous and compact  line of units like in CEAW).
A good Mix of units (inf, cavalry, artillery) is necessary.
It's more about movement and attacks must be well planned in order to win.

Upkeep is a good idea ! (you won't have tons of units, quality prevail !  :police:)

Politics (if i can say that), is not much elaborated. You're in war from the beginning until all your adversaries are dead  ;D

2) Points who need improvements :
=========================
a) As far as i'm concerned, i never saw a modification of the look of my units despite my high (and advance technologie).
b) Many mistakes in the manual. Nothing about the combined arms (when infantry is attacked)
c) Supply : even when an enemy unit is completly surrounded, he got medium supply ? and it's difficult to predict what the supply will be for your own units.
d) I conquer Austria, a pop up appear and say that a must be careful cause Austria may revolt again, and to be aware of Prussia... That's nice, but when it's the third time i quell a rebellion, it's a bit heuu ... too much
e) Very few french generals : There are around 7 generals and 2 admirals to be bought. That's a bit too short ... There must have been about 18 great Marshall during the various historical campaign
f) When a major country surrender, all the units invading the capital are send back to your pool... in case of Russia, that's a bit far !

Despite all the previous points, i think it's a good game and i will try on a higher difficulty level.
Enjoy !
That's all folks !!!

Just an additional note, to (story)tell you the beginning of the "Grand Campaign".

Yead 1805, all the French Fleet met the Red devil "Nelson" close to Trafalgar.
Equals in number, but not in quality (and no Admiral on the french side), It's hopeless to resist. You may sink 2-3 english Line ships (with a lot of luck), and it's over.

On land, it's a different story.
North : Napoleon March towards Vienna with a nice combined force. Attack shall be swift and deadly for the poor Austrian.

South : A small army of Napolitan Guards the south of France. Keeping Austrian units on alert in order to give an advantage to Napoleon.

Thanks, it is good to get feedback like this I can assure you Johan from Firepower, is collecting all the feedback and is already working on some issues addressed by players. It would help him if you post this on the official Slitherine support forum as well.

We worked on all the media as all art, UI, music, SFX, boxart and we set up and designed the initial scenario`s and gave historical advise.

The actual engine, AI and tweaking of the gameplay, unit and scenario balance is all in the hands of Firepower Entertainment, so if you post this feedback in the official forum, it will help building and improve future patches.

Again thanks for the nice words.

Cheers,

I can give info on this one though, it was never the intention to include every marshal, instead we aimed to have a nice mix of offensive, defensive, cavalry, artillery or organisation orientated commanders. We tried to do that for all factions.

So you will not see every important general or marshal, but a good mix. And sometimes a British Commander like Moore, who was killed in the Peninsula in 1809, you can recruit him even later in the game.

Historically inaccurate, but this is a game, where maybe you kick the The French out of Spain for good by 1809 or as Napoleon conquer Russia by 1813.

In a WW2 setting you can show upgrades through eg. different tanks, here it is not so visual, as basically outside some minor uniform changes over the years, that we never can show in a game like this anyway, units did not undergo mayor visual changes.

Upgrading your units through research is very important however, eg. infantry will repel cavalry attacks better as they master square formations better or you light infantry will be much more lethal when they have better organisation or your light cavalry will scout better, etc..

So the upgrades are clear in the better unit statistics, not so visual but research is very important.

Remember you can only upgrade(or repair) units that have not moved yet and oppose no enemy units within one hex. So from time to time, rest and upgrade and repair your units, winter is a good time as movement is limited, if you play with the advanced weather system on that is.

Thanks for the quick reply Tim  45

I'll post on the Slytherine Forum my remarks.

just a thing about your answers :

I understand that all of Napoleon's Marshall aren't there to buy but Marshall Berthier is really missing (he was the best of Napoleon's Marshall).

The look of the units doesn't change : no "real" dramatic change was made to the look of the Napoleonian's army during this period ... but a just a few colour change maybe, or a different hat would have been nice.

Anyway , i'll keep you updated on my progress.

Thx

Best Regards

Panzer Ier

Hi there,
another issue with the game.

There seems to be some problem with the A.I. concerning the naval Units.
Ai does not think to be necessary to repair their damaged ships.
Following the Trafalgar Battle, my french flett was destroyed but :
- English ships didn't repair any of their ships
- My remaining Dutch ship of the line destroyed all the wounded english ships
- 15 Turns afterward, France was the only master of the sea with only two ships of the line ...  b1

ps: A little bug maybe ?

Hi there,
i had to work home this week end and it gaves me time to make some more testing on CNAW.

Definitely a great game,. I'm playing french side during the "Grand Campaign" with equal advantage.

1) Experience : it's nice to introduce the notion of experience for units. It will drop where you reinforce them. For example i have a unit with 100 experience points (level 4), this unit reinforce 5 strenght. Expereince is now 50 for the unit.
I think it's a bit to drastic. Give it a 25% bonus cause old warrior make it easier for the new recruits. (which should make exp = 63xp for this case. (50xp loss * 25% bonus = 12.5)+50 = 63xp).

2) AI and Artillery :
Ai does not seem to buil Artillery units, and generals ... is it a bug ?

3) Neutral countries :
Why doesn't neutral countries build units ?

That's all Folks !!!

See You

Hi again,
just some more feedback about the game.

Playing the "Grand Campaign" with equal advantage and fog of war is a nice challenge  45

ps : just one thing though, the russians doesn't seem to want to take back the horse farm on their homeland... (with no garrison on it)

Enjoy !!!

Good to hear you are enjoying the game so much!

In the mean time we work on a first patch that will improve the game even more, but so far the game is very stable and almost bug free, so that makes us happy.

Cheers,
